Obama is new US president

Wednesday, 11.05.2008, 04:20pm (GMT+5.5)

Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama has been elected the first African-American president of the United States, setting a new record on Wednesday.

47-year-old Obama nabbed an easy win with 349 electoral college seats against republican candidate John McCain. A presidential candidate needs to win at least 270 electoral college votes.

Now elected the 44th president of the US, Obama used to serve as US senator for five years and teach law in University of Chicago.

Stopping Iraq war immediately and improving economic condition of the country were the major issues Obama raised during his address in different rallies.

Meanwhile, republican 73-year-old war veteran McCain accepted his loss in election and congratulated Obama.

Addressing the supporters at his home country in Arizona, McCain said that he is proud for Obama and telephoned to congratulate him.

Likewise, current President George W Bush telephoned Obama and congratulated him.
